Getting Started

What is a Cruise —
and What's Included?

A cruise is a holiday on a ship — but calling it that barely does it justice. Modern cruise ships are essentially floating resorts: multiple restaurants, pools, theatres, spas, gyms, kids' clubs, casinos, and bars, all sailing between destinations while you sleep. You unpack once and wake up somewhere new every day.

What makes cruising exceptional value is how much is included in the fare. Most cruises include your cabin, all meals in the main dining rooms and buffet, onboard entertainment, and use of all ship facilities. The ship is already paid for — you just show up.

✦ Typically Included
Cabin accommodation
All main dining & buffet meals
Entertainment & shows
Pools, gym & facilities
Kids' club (where available)
Port taxes & fees
✕ Usually Extra
Specialty restaurants
Drinks & beverages
Shore excursions
Spa treatments
Wi-Fi packages
Gratuities / service charge
NS Travel tip: Drinks packages and specialty dining can be booked in advance — often at a significantly lower price than onboard. We advise every client on whether these are worth it for their specific cruise.

Choosing the Right Cruise

Ship, Cabin, Destination —
How to Choose

The single biggest mistake first-time cruisers make is booking on price alone. The cheapest cabin on the wrong ship for the wrong itinerary will disappoint. The right ship, even at a slightly higher price, will change your life. Here's what to think about.

Cruise destination

Ship Size

Larger ships have more facilities and entertainment but can feel busy. Smaller ships feel more personal and access ports larger ships can't. First-timers often do well on a mid-size vessel.

Cabin Type

Interior cabins are the most affordable and perfectly comfortable for those who spend little time in their cabin. A balcony transforms the experience — waking up to open ocean is something else entirely.

Destination

Think about what excites you — history, beaches, nature, food, cities. Each region offers something different. For South Africans new to cruising, a local departure is the ideal starting point.

Experience Tier

MSC offers four tiers: Bella (great value), Fantastica (most popular), Aurea (premium with balcony and spa), and Yacht Club (all-inclusive luxury). We'll match you with the right one.

Duration

7-night cruises are the sweet spot for most travellers — enough time to settle in and see multiple destinations. Shorter cruises are great for first-timers. Longer voyages suit experienced cruisers.

Who You're Travelling With

Couples, families, solo travellers, and groups all have different needs. The right ship makes the difference. We ask the right questions to make sure the ship suits everyone onboard.

Before You Board

Documents, Insurance
& What to Pack

Getting to the terminal is only half the battle. Arriving with the wrong documents, insufficient insurance, or missing paperwork can mean being denied boarding — with no refund. We've seen it happen. Here's what every South African cruiser must have sorted before they leave home.

Pre-Departure Checklist

Valid passport — 6 months beyond return date minimum
Visa requirements checked for every port of call
Cruise-specific travel insurance in place
Medical evacuation cover confirmed
Cruise booking confirmation saved and printed
Online check-in completed (saves hours at the terminal)
Muster station and emergency procedures reviewed
Onboard account set up (credit card linked)
Any pre-booked excursions or dining confirmed
Prescription medication packed with documentation

Life Onboard

What to Expect
Once You're Sailing

Once you're onboard, the world of the ship opens up. Here's what you need to know to make the most of every day at sea.

Dining

Main dining rooms operate on set sittings (early or late) or anytime dining depending on your experience tier. The buffet is always open. Specialty restaurants require a reservation and an additional fee so book early as they fill up fast.

Entertainment

Every evening the main theatre hosts a show with Broadway-style productions, acrobatics, comedy or music. There are also bars, lounges with live music, a casino and themed parties. The entertainment programme is published daily.

Onboard Account

There is no cash on a cruise ship. Everything is charged to your onboard account via your cruise card, the card that also acts as your cabin key and boarding pass. Your account is settled at the end of the voyage.

Gratuities

Most cruise lines add a daily service charge per person to your onboard account, typically between $12–$18 per person per day. This covers your cabin steward waiters and kitchen crew. It is standard and mandatory for South Africans.

Dress Codes

Most evenings are smart casual, no shorts or vest tops in the main dining rooms. Some evenings are formal (gala nights) where guests dress up. Pack at least one elegant outfit. Pool areas and buffet are always casual.

Wi-Fi & Connectivity

Wi-Fi is available on all ships but is sold as a package and can be expensive. Consider purchasing a package in advance for a better rate or embrace being offline. Many guests find disconnecting one of the best parts of cruising.

NS Travel tip: Pick up the daily programme from Guest Services, or use the MSC App and plan your day the night before. The most popular activities, restaurants and shows fill up quickly especially on sea days.
05.
In Port

Making the Most of
Every Port of Call

Port days are the highlight of any cruise — but they require more thought than most first-timers realise. You have a set number of hours ashore, and missing the ship is not a scenario you want to find yourself in. The ship will not wait for you.

Here's how to approach each port with confidence, whether you're booking through the ship or exploring independently.

Ship Excursions
Guaranteed to be back for departure
Vetted operators and guides
Ship will wait if excursion runs late
Large groups, less flexibility
Independent Exploration
More flexibility and freedom
Often significantly cheaper
Your responsibility to be on time
Requires more research and planning

The golden rule: Know your all-aboard time and be back at least 30 minutes early. Traffic, delays, and long queues at the gangway happen. If you miss the ship, you are responsible for getting to the next port at your own cost. We've seen it happen - it's expensive and stressful.

NS Travel tip: We give every client a port-by-port briefing for their specific itinerary, which ports are easy to explore independently, which are better with the ship and exactly how much time you have in each one.

If Things Go Wrong

What to Do When
Things Don't Go to Plan

Cruising is overwhelmingly safe and wonderful but things do sometimes go wrong. We've seen most of them. Click any scenario below for the full picture.

01
Missed or Changed Ports
Weather, operational issues, or political situations can cause ports to be skipped or substituted.
Port Changes

Port changes happen more often than most first-timers expect and they are almost always outside the cruise line's control. Weather windows, political situations, operational requirements, or another ship already berthed can all result in a port being skipped, substituted, or visited in a different order.

This is firmly within the cruise line's contractual rights, and it is not grounds for a refund. The ship will typically compensate with additional onboard credit, extra entertainment, or an alternative port stop. Disappointing? Sometimes. A disaster? Never, if you go in knowing it can happen.

What to do
Accept that port changes are a reality of cruising, build flexibility into your plans
Check whether any shore excursions you've booked are affected and request refunds if applicable
Ask Guest Services what onboard compensation is being offered
Use any unexpected sea days to enjoy the ship, they're often the most relaxing days of the voyage

02
Medical Emergencies High Priority
Every ship has a medical centre but treatment at sea is expensive, and evacuation can cost hundreds of thousands of rands.
Critical

Every cruise ship carries qualified doctors and nurses, and the onboard medical centre can handle most common situations. But treatment is billed at private hospital rates and for anything serious, the cost escalates rapidly. A medical evacuation by helicopter from international waters can cost R500,000 or more before you've even reached a hospital ashore.

This is why cruise-specific travel insurance with full medical evacuation cover is entirely non-negotiable. Standard travel policies frequently exclude maritime medical evacuation, we check every policy we recommend for this gap specifically.

What to do
Go to the ship's medical centre immediately, don't delay seeking treatment
Have your insurance policy details and emergency number accessible, not buried in luggage
Keep all medical receipts and documentation for your insurance claim
Carry a list of your medications and any relevant medical history in your carry-on

03
Cancellations & Itinerary Changes
Cancellation penalties increase sharply as departure approaches and the rules differ depending on who cancels.
Know Your Rights

The rules around cancellation depend entirely on who is cancelling and when. If you cancel, the cruise line's standard cancellation policy applies, penalties typically begin 75 days before departure and increase significantly the closer you get. Within 14 days of sailing, you may forfeit the full fare.

If the cruise line cancels or makes a significant change to the itinerary, the picture is different: you are generally entitled to a full refund or the option to transfer to an alternative sailing. Travel insurance covers unexpected cancellations on your side, including illness, bereavement, and certain work situations. We walk through all of this at the time of booking so there are no surprises.

What to do
Contact NS Travel before contacting the cruise line directly, we'll guide the process
Check your travel insurance policy for applicable cancellation cover
Gather supporting documentation for any insurance claim (medical certificates, etc.)
If the cruise line has cancelled, ask specifically about alternative sailings before accepting a refund

04
Lost or Delayed Luggage
Flying to your departure port introduces baggage risk, here's how to protect yourself before it becomes a problem.
Pack Smart

Airlines lose and delay luggage. When your final destination is a cruise ship that sails at a fixed time, a delayed bag at the airport becomes a much bigger problem than it would be on a land holiday. We've had clients board a 14-night Mediterranean cruise with nothing but what was in their hand luggage, it's manageable but it's not how you want to start a holiday.

The solution is almost entirely in the packing. What you put in your carry-on determines how bad a lost bag scenario actually is.

What to do
Always pack medications, valuables, one change of clothes and swimwear in carry-on luggage
Never put anything irreplaceable like passports, jewellery, electronics in checked bags
Report delayed luggage to the airline immediately on arrival and get a reference number
The airline can often forward delayed luggage to your next port of call, ask them specifically
Keep receipts for any essential items purchased, your travel insurance should cover these costs

05
Theft or Loss Onboard & Ashore
Cruise ships are very safe but port cities require the same street awareness you'd apply anywhere unfamiliar.
Stay Safe

Theft onboard a cruise ship is rare as these are controlled, secure environments with CCTV throughout and a contained passenger population. The vast majority of incidents happen ashore, in busy port areas where pickpockets target tourists. Some ports require more caution than others, and we brief our clients specifically on any ports that warrant extra awareness.

Onboard, the in-room safe is there to be used. It takes thirty seconds and removes almost all risk. Many guests never use it and regret it.

What to do
Use the in-room safe for your passport, extra cash, jewellery, and spare cards every time
Take only what you need ashore, one card, the day's cash, your phone
Report any theft onboard to ship security immediately and request a written report for insurance
Ashore, use a money belt or hidden pouch in busy tourist areas and markets
Keep a photo of your passport on your phone, if the physical document is stolen, this speeds up consular assistance

Frequently Asked Questions

Your Questions,
Honestly Answered

The questions we get asked most often — answered from real experience, not a brochure.

Absolutely and that's exactly what we specialise in. Cruising represents exceptional value when you consider that accommodation, meals, and entertainment are all included. We find the best fares for South African travellers, including rand-priced options and rand-friendly payment plans where available. A 7-night cruise can often work out cheaper per day than a comparable land-based holiday.
At minimum, a valid passport, typically with at least 6 months validity beyond your return date, though some itineraries require more. Certain ports require visas, and the requirements vary depending on your South African passport. We do a full documentation check for every client and flag everything you need to sort out well in advance.
Yes, this is one of the most important things we advise. Standard travel insurance often doesn't cover the specific risks of being at sea. Medical evacuations at sea can cost hundreds of thousands of rands. You need a policy that explicitly covers cruising, including medical evacuation. We help every client understand exactly what to look for.
Typically included: your cabin, all main dining room meals, buffet meals, onboard entertainment and shows, pools, gym, and ship facilities. Typically extra: specialty restaurants, drinks, shore excursions, spa treatments, Wi-Fi, and daily service charges (gratuities). We brief every client on exactly what's included in their specific fare so you can budget accurately.
Yes! South Africa has a seasonal cruise programme with departures from Durban and Cape Town, typically running from October to April. These local itineraries visit destinations along the African east coast including Mozambique, Madagascar, and the Namibian coast. They're ideal for first-time cruisers and offer excellent value. We can also assist with international cruises that require flying to a departure port.
Modern cruise ships are extremely safe and have dedicated medical centres with trained doctors and nurses. In the event of a serious medical emergency, the ship's medical team will stabilise the patient and arrange evacuation if necessary. The cost of this evacuation is substantial — which is why the right travel insurance is essential. We brief every client on this before they sail.
That's exactly why NS Travel exists. You don't need to know anything before you contact us, we'll ask the right questions, explain everything you need to know, and guide you from your first enquiry to your first sail-away. We've helped many South Africans take their first cruise, and there is nothing more satisfying than hearing how much they loved it.
